Talking cars may mean safer cars

Smart cars just keep getting smarter. Now they’re going to learn to talk. At least to each other.

The Department of Transportation has, for years, been experimenting with vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems in Ann Arbor, MI. It seems now that those experiments have proven successful, and the DOT is in support of this safety system. They are preparing, along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, to move forward with requiring the V2V feature as a safety feature on new cars in the future. With the V2V systems, cars will communicate information, such as speed and position, with nearby vehicles to alert drivers of impending dangers. This communication will send basic safety data between the vehicles, and security and privacy measures will be taken to guarantee protected communications.
